War criminals for McCain
By Michael J.W. Stickings
John McCain has tapped Henry Kissinger to be the honorary co-chair of his presidential campaign in New York. Which should win him the war criminal vote for sure.
No wonder, as Jonathan Singer is reporting at MyDD, McCain is losing independents. According to a recent poll, Hillary would beat him 50 to 43.

This is surprising, as according to Bob Woodward, Bush has met with Kissinger more than with any other source of foreign policy advice outside the administration. (This in itself should lead us to question the extent of Bush's "idealism".) How can the chief sponsor of an amendment requiring terror suspects to be treated humanely get into bed with the eminence grise of Nixon-era realpolitik? I thought McCain was supposed to be some kind of "maverick" who would appeal to Democrats and independents. What's he up to?

Perhaps he's not quite the maverick the media have made him out to be. He's always been much more conservative than his reputation. But he's also now facing the realities of the GOP primary system. He was able to run as an outsider in 2000, but now he's the inside frontrunner. And to win, he'll need to embrace the right-wing base. If he does that too much, though, he may win the nomination but turn off too many independents and moderates to win the general election.
