Glory days

By Heraclitus

Be sure to play the Bruce Springsteen song as you read this article in Salon about George Allen (aka "Macaca boy") and his days as a college football player at UVA. This quote pretty much tells you what to expect:

"Allen said he came to Virginia because he wanted to play football in a place where 'blacks knew their place,'" said Dr. Ken Shelton, a white radiologist in North Carolina who played tight end for the University of Virginia football team when Allen was quarterback. "He used the N-word on a regular basis back then."

  • FWIW, I was a racist a**hole too in my late teens, and dropped that way of thinking completely while in college. Which I don't think is that uncommon. So loathe as I am to say anything in support of Sen Allen, I can't really throw stones at him for this.

  • Fair enough, AT, but this is only one moment in a long history or patterns of overt support for racism (which essentially means "racism"), often of violent racism. The pattern has continued well into his adult life, as far as the recent rally.
