Homosexuality and suicide
Here's "a startling statistic" from the great guys at Bill and Kent's Place, a new, non-political addition to my blogroll: In the United States, "a gay teen attempts suicide every 35 minutes. About every six hours, one succeeds."
It's not just about same-sex marriage and the extension of civil rights. It's about treating everyone with respect and dignity regardless of sexual orientation. Is that not a worthy goal?

That is a shocking statistic. I am always reluctant to believe in statistics since they can be manipulated to endorse one's viewpoint. But addressing and eliminating the uneven, vicious, dehumanizing treatment of people who identify as gay in society is always a worthy cause. Teens go through enough crap from biological and social changes. It can only be harder for those who are gay.

Yes, of course, a statistic is a statistic, and there may be more to this one than I know.
But it's still shocking. And it's a problem that needs to be addressed more openly.
