Here in Texas, I'm pretty convinced that most people are every bit as racist as they were 50 years ago. However, they're now smart enough to only use the "N" word privately at home, or amongst friends. I'm constantly astonished at how often I will be talking to someone and they'll casually use the "N" word. I'm equally amazed at how often these same people vehemently deny that they are racist. It reaches the point where it is downright surreal and bizarre. I have an acquaintance who has been on a big gun-buying binge since Obama was elected. He has told me repeatedly that he is convinced that the "n*gger" in the White House is coming for his guns. What's amazing is that he is far from the only person I've talked to here who has exactly the same views.
