Ed Orcutt is such a kidder (or an idiot)

By Richard K. Barry

Good one, Ed.
Okay, I'll take a chance here, because this definitely sounds like an Onion send-up. According to something called the Seattle Bike Blog, Ed Orcutt, a Republican state legislator in Washington, does not believe bicycling is good for the environment because the activity causes cyclists to have "an increased heart rate and respiration."

In an email to a constituent who questioned the wisdom of a new bike tax, he said this:

"You would be giving off more CO2 if you are riding a bike than driving in a car," he said. However, he said he had not "done any analysis" of the difference in CO2 from a person on a bike compared to the engine of a car.

He also said that "You can't just say that there's no pollution as a result of riding a bicycle." And trees cause more pollution than automobiles, right Ronnie, I mean Ed?

This is so silly it has to be a hoax. After learning that the pig didn't really rescue the goat, I don't believe anything.

  • It's not a hoax, unfortunately. The Cascade Bicycle Club posted the entire e-mail exchange between a bike shop owner and Rep. Ed Orcutt who stated he favors a bike tax because cyclists emit excessive C02 when they ride.
