Hacking reality: "Climategate," denialist propaganda, and the truth about climate change
I've been meaning to post for a while now on the whole "climategate" thing, the supposed scandal uncovered in those hacked e-mails from the University of East Anglia's Climactic Research Unit. Global warming skeptics/denialists on the right are obviously making a big deal of those e-mails. What they seem to think is that they reveal some sort of grand conspiracy to cover up the truth, to fix the evidence around what amounts to a massive hoax, a scandal that undermines the entirety of climate change science. But to me, all they reveal is that there isn't any conspiracy at all, that it's all much ado about very little. Here's TNR's Brad Plumer:
From what I've gathered, the stolen e-mails reveal that climatologists are: a) engaged in a lot of boring and dry data-crunching, b) extremely hostile toward global-warming skeptics like Cato's Pat Michaels, and c) not always nice people.
I think that's exactly right. As is this:
One major question is whether any of the stolen e-mails show that climate scientists are somehow fudging data. And the answer, as best I can tell, is "certainly not."
Some of the e-mails may be "unseemly" -- or, rather, what is contained in some of them is -- and they do at the very least create the impression of impropriety on the part of some climate change scientists, but that's it. What they show is that these scientists are all-too-human, that there is politics within the scientific community, and that the scientific community isn't a monolith of unitary thought. There is disagreement, there is bitterness, and there is pettiness, but there is no overriding "fraud" -- and there is no scandal. (Make sure to read Brad's post in full for context.)
Skeptics/denialists are making so much of this, and predictably so, and they will no doubt continue to select decontextualized points to back up their indefensible case. It is essential, as always, to push back. Here's an excellent post on "climategate," quoted in full, by Alan Colmes:
Climate scientists who just released "The Copenhagen Diagnosis" say ice sheets are melting at an increased rate, and future sea-level rise will be higher than previously forecast. But scientific evidence means nothing to those with an anti-global warming agenda, who point to illegally hacked mails to try to prove that global warming is a hoax. Sadly for them, the anti-global-warming hysteria isn't all it's cracked up to be.
The ugly part of this has more to do with scientists jockeying for position and arguing over how to best put forth their theories in a contentious political climate. The uglier part is those who are distorting this for the purpose of advancing anti-environmental theories. RealClimate puts it in perspective.
More interesting is what is not contained in the emails. There is no evidence of any worldwide conspiracy, no mention of George Soros nefariously funding climate research, no grand plan to 'get rid of the MWP', no admission that global warming is a hoax, no evidence of the falsifying of data, and no 'marching orders' from our socialist/communist/vegetarian overlords. The truly paranoid will put this down to the hackers also being in on the plot though.
Instead, there is a peek into how scientists actually interact and the conflicts show that the community is a far cry from the monolith that is sometimes imagined. People working constructively to improve joint publications; scientists who are friendly and agree on many of the big picture issues, disagreeing at times about details and engaging in 'robust' discussions; Scientists expressing frustration at the misrepresentation of their work in politicized arenas and complaining when media reports get it wrong; Scientists resenting the time they have to take out of their research to deal with over-hyped nonsense. None of this should be shocking.
Out-of-context cherry-picking is the furthest thing from science.
But, then, so is global warming denialism, and so is the right's manufactured "climategate" scandal. In the real world, where science trumps propaganda, or at least where science reveals the truth and propaganda seeks to obscure it with lies, the struggle to address the most pressing crisis of our time, a crisis that could very well lead to massive global destabilization and genocide, continues. And it is the scientific community, occasional unseemliness and all, that leads the way.

On the defensive now, I see. The "movement" is in deep trouble. Calling the other side "deniers" is a cheap shot - trying to lump them in with Holocaust deniers - offensive and cynical.
By Anonymous, at 7:25 AM
"Denial" is a popular meme these days so why do you automatically jump to thinking holocaust? Is this its only use? No, you just like your naysaying. It is easy to say, "Nay." Let's engage instead to solve long term and short term problems of climate, pollution, and overpopulation. Ostriches need not apply.
By tellio, at 8:28 AM
There's no "movement," Anon, so you completely discredit yourself. What there is is science, and, as always, there is disagreement. It's not ideology. What is striking is that there is such broad consensus among serious scientists.
By Michael J.W. Stickings, at 8:45 AM
Sure there's a movement - it's called the oil business. The only scientists still beating pots and pans and pretending there's doubt or controversy work for or are affiliated with the oil industry.
No, the jury is not out - the verdict was in a long time ago and the sentence is being carried out. Warming is actually occurring at a much faster rate than the "alarmists" were predicting a few years ago.

All I can say is that they are a pack of lying, cheating, scheming, stealing, scientists. And having an argument with you is pointless as you are one of them.
By Anonymous, at 10:23 AM
Hi - I'm the first Anon, not the second.
Yeah, Fogg, a lot of "deniers" are connected to big oil? Why? Consipracy? No -- big oil, coal, natural gasm etc., are sick of the shit they hear, so they need to hire scientists who have proper data to help them. Read Willie Soon.

Yes, right, Exxon is only sticking up for the truth even if it costs them - just like they did after the Valdez oil spill because it was unfair. Denial/belief these are both emotional things and I'm not interested in your religion or its dogmas. Where's the evidence? what research do you have?
You really aren't any kind of authority, you have no credentials as a scientist, much less a Geologist or paleoclimatologist and your passion gives the lie to your objectivity. Show me the evidence! Go ahead.
"All I can say is that they are a pack of lying, cheating, scheming, stealing, scientists."
and as for you - yes, that is all you can say, because you have nothing - nothing whatever to back up your statements. Show me some evidence and remember, character assassination and paranoid fantasy are not arguments much less evidence. There is climatological data on temperatures and atmospheric composition going back hundreds of thousands of years - what the hell have you got? Stock in Amoco? Belief? Contempt for science? You don't belong in this discussion - I'm not even sure you belong in the Homo Sapiens gene pool.
And still, it's getting hotter and at a faster rate. Your grandchildren will laugh at you. Your great grandchildren will curse you.

Hey Capt. Fogg,
Hey this is the second anon and my backup is this! I don't have a clue whether it's warming or not and can't convince you or anyone either way! Why! Because so much data has been screwed with, so many numbers manipulated, the graphs contrived! They have corrupted and tainted all global warming and cooling data sets! Tell me something, WHO DO I BELIEVE NOW! WHO CAN I TRUST!

Who funds the non “oil/coal lobby” scientists? Isn’t it government and environmental groups? They have an equally vested interest in AWG being real.
Now it turns out the AWG science was rigged from the start. As a result, the conclusions reached are fraudulent and untrustworthy.
If you had invested with Bernie Madoff, wouldn’t you worry about your money if you heard he was a fraud? Or would you say "He might be a crook but his investments are sound. Look; I have papers from him saying so. The economics are settled.".

1st Anon back - I think you all know this (except maybe the second anon): it's NOT climate change that is being denied; it's the assertion that humans are predominantly responsible for it that is being challenged. So, if this assertion is challenged, so are the "solutions" such as the redistribution of wealth from the US to 3rd World Nations. You see, you've been duped. The Communists found a nice home in the environmentalist movement after the Wall fell. And the old bureaucrats among them have written BS EU legislation like R.E.A.C.H.
By Anonymous, at 2:34 PM
Sometimes. Unless it offends the Republicans or the corporations that own them, and then they're traitors or heretics or "liberals."
Look, I've been through this crap with the psychos who insist evolution is controversial and real scientists are turning back to the Bible. I've heard from crackpots who insist that dating things by radioactive decay is "a joke" and the universe is 6000 years old and there's a conspiracy of scientists. . . There are some who insist that the earth mysteriously produces oil by an unknown process for which there is no evidence and so there will never be a shortage. Others insist that Smallpox went away by itself and vaccinations played no part. It's just the way little minds can pretend they're not stupid - it's the other guy and Relativity is just a theory, you know.
This is just more of the same. You simply can't explain to a dog that it's a dog and there isn't a point in trying to win an argument with a nutjob, an idiot, a drunk or a liar. If it weren't for the fact that they grow old and die, we'd still be on a flat Earth at the middle of the universe.
You can lead a horse to water, and you can lead a moron to the evidence, but my money is on getting the horse to drink before you get one of these conspiracy creeps to admit he's wrong.
By Capt. Fogg, at 2:39 PM
Hi everybody-
I'm a conspiracy theorist and I'm going to e-mail my Senator and demand that he vote against any climate change treaty the Obammassiah signs.
Together, we will overcome the yay-sayers who insist the US should transfer its wealth to third-world countries, which is really for the benefit of the EU and the UN elites, who want to distribute the largess at US expense, while giving the other developed countries of the world a trade advantage they could never enjoy otherwise.
Why don't the climate change promoters among the scientific community release their data for public consumption? What's wrong with transparency? Isn't that what the Bush Administration critics used to scream about over the Bush-Cheney energy policy, that it was conducted behind closed doors, without benefit of public scrutiny?
Well, let's see the data, and let's see it all, from beginning to end. Otherwise, shut the fuck up, and prepare for a massive fail, because most of us just aren't going for it, at least not in the long run.
If you think I'm kidding, just wait until all of these restrictions and regulations trickles down into the pocket books and the energy costs of average Americans. Once you piss them off enough, you can cry about the poor little old third world all the hell you want. We won't care, because we're not as afraid of the big bad terrorists as you like to think we are.
The newest meme in this bullshit controversy revealed. Conservatives are against the Global Warming proponents, so let's candy-coat it by calling it a matter of national security and try to scare them with the specter of third world masses on the move and wreaking havoc.
Bullshit.
How;s all that for trollishness, Octopussy? Should my comments be deleted, cunt? Typical leftist fascist mind-control techniques. Shut up the opposition before more people listen to them.
By SecondComingOfBast, at 6:04 PM
Pagan Temple -- Please troll here more often! I need support and Octopussy, Suckings, Mustang Cocky, and Fagg need to be put in their place!
They like to call me a troll beause of being Anonymous, but only Sucking (J Michael) has the guts to give his (allegedly) real name. After all, whi is Capt. Fagg? It's only fairly recently that he' shown his face - might be Henry (Nostrils) Waxman's brother????
By Anonymous, at 8:40 PM
The real good stuff appears in the source code. All those who say that the Climategate issue in nonsense only dismiss the emails. They never mention the comments in the code.
By Anonymous, at 9:14 PM
Yeah, it's great to get trolls here, morons who think making fun of our names is just so hilarious. All you have are your talking points, and you probably aren't smart enough to know you're just being manipulated.
Still, you just add to the evidence of conservatives being stupid.
And Pagan Temple... seriously. Are you also that stupid? There is ample evidence out there. I know you aren't getting it from Inhofe and the other denialists, and I know you're just repeating what you've heard elsewhere, but maybe take the time to educate yourself a bit. Or is that too much to ask?
By Michael J.W. Stickings, at 11:12 PM
What, didja spend half an hour trying to blow up my photo with one hand on your dick just to try to see what I look like? My mother wouldn't recognize me from that picture -- of course yours would know me anywhere.
I don't use my real name because there are smelly little losers like you who think they can impress Jody Foster. Some of them aren't cowards who hide behind a computer screen and fling shit at their betters -- like you.
No sorry, I don't look anything like Waxman - does he turn you on?
By Capt. Fogg, at 10:21 AM

People. . .People. . .We know you’re disappointed; coming so close. It was all within reach. Now, you watch in horror as your Henny-Penny-The-Sky-Is-Warming climate change hoax plummets like a runaway meteor while climatological experts — men and women learned in the CRU gang’s fields — take your one world puppets and pimps to the scientific woodshed after reading the data and emails and correspondence they hid from their contemporaries lo these many years.
Trying to make the hacker and those reading the CRU’s files the conspirators against mother earth won’t work. Not this time.
What you could say, though, is that the shills at the Climate Research Unit at East Anglia University in Britain along with their American and Club of Rome and Bilderberger confederates cherry-picked real science for the data they needed to hack into the public’s mind with a global warming lie for the puppeteers behind the curtain.
Gosh, if you could only catch your “criminal” hacker how the columns would flow; no end to the pilloring and pious posturings and what-might-have-beens.
Whatever the hacker’s motivation to distribute the global warmers’ files — laid bare before the world and experts to study — their content reveals an unquestionable, deliberate, perpetration of a global warming hoax upon humanity and the planet; an organized cabal perpetrating a heinous lie and hoax across the globe to enrich themselves and their handlers; an evil intention, really
Global warming is a hoax that will sear itself into people’s minds right alongside Darwin, War of the Worlds, the Piltdown Man, the Loch Ness Monster, 9/11’s false flag “terrorist attack,” Swine Flu, genetically modified seeds, the “Green Revolution,” and the great “Wall Street Meltdown” hoax.
All of the hoaxes following 9/11 were initiated, supported, and set in motion by the world’s mega-rich “elitist” pests, the England headquartered international banking cabal that runs the Bank of International Settlements in Basil, Switzerland as well as the world’s central banks, and the multinational BigAgra/BigPharma corporations — the people behind the curtain.
All of the above hoaxes were designed to make them money, eugenicize the world, and give them absolute control over the earth’s resources.
Now, there’s you some tin-foil-hat-grist for the weeks ahead.
A lab employee in Latvia decided to test the 72kg of vaccine that Baxter International (an elite-controlled vaccine manufacturer) had shipped to labs in some of the European countries to be given out as vaccine shots to thousands of individuals as “protection” against the swine flu hoax. All of the lab animals tested with Baxter’s vaccine died. The lab employee wasn’t required to test the vaccine. He/she just did it. And prevented the contaminated vaccine from starting a “false flag pandemic” in Europe.
What motivated the lab employee to test it?
What motivated Dr. David Ray Griffin, a 70-something retired theologian and professor, to methodically expose the 9/11 false flag hoax using the scientific method in his nine books?
And what motivated your “criminal” hacker to distribute on the Internet the global warming cabal’s data, thoughts, and files?
You think money motivated these people?
I think not.
God has His ways.

You have to give grudging respect to the creators of the climategate scam. They have completely dominated the microphone and suppressed the voices setting the facts straight. They have managed to cast doubt on even the most reliable, responsible and honest research. They have convinced the American people that the politicization of climate change is more important than climate change itself. They have once again justified the abnigation for answering problems when the answers to those problems fall outside the perephery of their narrow-minded philosophy. Not too shabby for a day's work, I'd say. And at the end of the day there are two truths that will always work in their favor: that organized fanaticism will always trump the truth, and anyone expecting the bulk of the public to be intellignet and reasonable will be desparatly disappointed. As we make a three-ringed circus out of our climate issues until the point of no return, all I can say is, hold on to your hats, we're in for a bumpy ride.
