Fox News plays up Obama date night criticism

By Michael J.W. Stickings

Here are the headline and synopsis of Fox News's article on Republican criticism of the Obamas' Broadway date night in New York:

Obamas' Date Night in New York City Draws Criticism

Even before the Obamas left Washington, the there-and-back trip drew criticism from Republicans who questioned the president's decision to travel to New York for a night of entertainment during a recession and while automakers struggle to survive.

This is, as you might (should) expect from Fox News, incredibly stupid.

First, the only Republican criticism cited comes from the RNC. No specific Republicans are quoted. The RNC is obviously looking to score any political points it can, and, under Michael Steele (but not solely because of him), it has turned itself into a comedy of errors and, for the most part, an irrelevance.

Second, are the Obamas not allowed to do anything normal? Are they not allowed to enjoy themselves? Yes, it's a serious economic crisis, and, yes, many Americans are suffering, but it's not like the Obamas should submit to a life of monastic deprivation and denial. Barack told Michelle he'd take her to a show after the election. That's all. Taking time off, a brief time off, to take in a show does not mean that Obama doesn't care about the economy or about General Motors or about what's happening to ordinary Americans (almost all of whom, I'm sure, like their various entertainments even, or especially, during times of economic crisis and personal uncertainty).

Third, where was the RNC -- and where was Fox News -- when Bush took time off to golf, or clear brush, after 9/11? Was that not a time of crisis? (We were certainly told it was, as Bush and Cheney did their utmost to scare Americans into submission.)

Fourth, what's wrong with going to see a show in New York? The Fox News article lists shows the Obamas could have seen in Washington. But so what? Are they only allowed to enjoy themselves, only allowed to seek out entertainment, inside the Beltway?

Fifth, a date night with his wife hardly takes much time away from Obama's presidency. He works long hours. He is, unlike Bush, a president who is clearly on top of things. Taking a night off (not that he's ever really off the job) to spend some quality time with Michelle, and to relax, is probably just what he needed. And what? Republicans in Washington are avoiding anything resembling entertainment at the moment? While Obama was in New York, they were all reading policy papers and thinking about the state of the economy? Yeah, sure they were. I realize the president is held to higher standards even than a mere senator -- or at least Obama is; I'm not sure Bush was -- but this is ridiculous.

As far as I'm concerned, Obama's "night of entertainment" was fully deserved. But Fox News, like the RNC -- and Fox News is pretty much just an organ of the Republican Party anyway -- is both deeply partisan and anti-Obama, and, here as elsewhere, it rarely passes up an opportunity, even one it makes up on its own, to smear the president. In a time of economic crisis, it is Fox News that is wasting everyone's time and diverting attention away from what really matters.

  • "It's not like the Obamas should submit to a life of monastic deprivation and denial" - well said.

Well written and comprehensive rebuttal of yet another wishy washy attack on Obama from Fox.

It's wonderful to see the pathetic stories Fox is forced to trump up to try and discredit Obama. They really are getting desperate and it's brilliant to see!

  • Republicans/conservatives are incredibly stupid. I still have a hard time believing that one wingnut actually thinks that Sonia Sotomayor should pronounce her last name the way he thinks it should be pronounced I believe his name is Krikorian. How freaking asinine! And now Obama can't relax by going to some kind of show? How many times did Bush take a vacation? Didn't he know that there was a "war on terror" going on? Iraq? Afghanistan? Honestly, these people haven't just jumped the shark. They've jumped over the freaking moon!!!

  • Three planes, a helicopter flight, closing down 6th Avenue, and this administration can't even Obama is release an estimate of the cost of the Obama's "date night"? But it was fine for Democrats to criticize the cost of Sarah Palin's wardrobe, right?

What a bunch of hypocrites! Claiming this "date night" expense (which has been estimated at well over $1M) as keeping a campaign promise to his wife is the height of arrogance, lack of compassion for the American people and elitism. 2010 can't come fast enough when the Republicans will take back Congress and put a stop to this march to fascism.

  • 2010 can't come fast enough when the Republicans will take back Congress and put a stop to this march to fascism.Dream on.

In 2010 the Republicans are going to gain 10 seats in the Senate and 40-50 in the House? There aren't that many seats to be gained in the South, even by the Southern Party.

The guy went to a play in New York. Get over it.

  • What's wrong is that it was a slap in the face to every tax paying citizen and the hundreds of families that will be struggling to get by once General Motors files for bankruptcy on MONDAY. What is wrong with this country that we are so star struck that we can't see whats wrong with the President's $400,000 date night. You should be outraged! Its a slap in YOUR face.

  • It doesn't bother me that the Obama's took a date night - What bothers me is the expense placed on the backs of the taxpayers. As most all of us fall into the taxpayers category, I want to hear all of the taxpayers positive feedback when the taxpayers can't even afford to pay attention. All of the money it took to fly Air Force One to New York. Maybe the Obama's should pick up the travel tab and then no one would have a problem with date night. And by the way, Mr. Obama sure had his negative comments when they took Air Force One for photo ops to publish new pamphlets. What about the comments made to all of the CEO's of the auto industry when they traveled in their private jets to beg the government for bail out money??? Our nation is in a serious decline Mr. Obama should practice what he has been preaching in public. If you expect the taxpayer to spend within their financial capabilities and when passing the credit card bill it was stated that all people using credit cards should be financially responsible for their debt. Well, need I say more???

  • What gets me is the fact that the left can't see how elitist Obama is simply because he is hiding behind the mask of the typical liberal pushing for the "everyman" because they are blinded by their own idealism.

  • "none of these geniuses bothered to check who wrote the story. That's right, the article in question was not written by Fox News at all, but by that "organ of the Republican party": the Associated Press! It has or will run on hundreds of websites and papers all over the country. Here it is from the AP itself. If it weren't so hilarious, it would be, well, still pretty funny."

  • Fox News is ultimately responsible for publishing the story. And it is a deeply unfair and unbalanced story.

  • Of course this is another limp tu quoque designed to justify the gifts of billions and the theft of further billions to Bush and Cheney associates. ( lets not mention the trillions to fix the collapse they caused and further trillions for the family owned war.)

Sure Nixon was a criminal but Clinton had sex!

Sure, Reagan sold weapons to the enemy and murdered peasants in Central America -- Clinton got a $200 haircut!

And sure, Bush drove an old Ford pickup to his monthly vacations in Texas instead of flying AF-1. what was it - 500 days?

Wah wah wah - I'm drowning in the tears of indignation.

  • I'm not a hater. I'm not in a position to judge or criticize anyone. I’m a Soldier (deployed), and quite frankly I’m appalled at the redirect I constantly here on Fox News, no disrespect intended. There has to be a better way to go about conveying information. Please give the information without shoving it down our throats. I pray for wisdom and that God will open our eyes to see the truth behind all the noise over the air ways. I constantly here Soldiers mumbling and making efforts to get away from the television because of the mere fact that the constant verbiage is numbing. I understand that it is your right and opinions that are on display, allow us to make up our own minds. We are a great nation, and we are best served when we work out our differences at the table not shouting at each other. Our house might be messy, but we pray for our leaders that God would give them the wisdom to make sound decisions. GOD, Country, Family
