Saudi ugly

CNN: "A Saudi Arabian court has sentenced a 75-year-old Syrian woman to 40 lashes, four months imprisonment and deportation from the kingdom for having two unrelated men in her house, according to local media reports."
Lovely.
And why exactly do so many people -- like the Bushies -- consider Saudi Arabia such a close friend and ally?
Oh, right. Oil. I suppose that excuses all sorts of ugliness, nastiness, and brutality.
Right?

And then there's the Church of Rome that has excommunicated a woman and her daughter because the 9 YEAR OLD daughter who was raped by her stepfather and was pregnant with twins had an abortion. She would likely die without an abortion.
Of course excommunication is meaningless, and 40 lashes could be fatal to an elderly person but let's not forget what the priorities of religion are.
Is there any country dominated by religion that lives up to any modern concept of justice?
