You got the peaches, I got the cream
By Michael J.W. Stickings
I seem to be battling a bit of a cold at the moment, which is why I haven't blogged since last night, but here, for your end-of-weekend musical enjoyment, is one of my favourite singer-songwriters, Toronto's own Emm Gryner, performing her amazing version of Def Leppard's "Pour Some Suger on Me" along with Buck 65 and Holy F*ck for The Side Street Project.
Gryner has done two albums of piano-oriented cover songs, Girl Versions (2001) and Songs of Love and Death (2005). The latter is good, but I highly recommend the former, which includes "Pour Some Suger on Me" and covers of songs by such masculine artists as Fugazi ("Waiting Room"), Ozzy Osbourne ("Crazy Train"), The Clash ("Straight to Hell"), Blur ("Song 2"), Nick Cave ("Straight to You"), and Stone Temple Pilots ("Big Bang Baby"). There's even a Death Cab for Cutie cover. You've never heard these songs done quite like this. (Her website is here.)
