The Turkish-Kurd situation grows worse

By Edward Copeland

The PKK ambushed Turkish soldiers, killing 12 and escalating the Turkey-Iraq border tensions even further. Aside from the obvious tragedies of such an event, what's going to be worse is that incompetent congressional leadership of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will allow the GOP to blame it all on the Democrats at the same time that most of the media continue to ignore that Dubya has turned a blind eye to attacks on the PKK within Iraq by both Turkey and Iran for years:

A brazen ambush by Kurdish militants that left at least 12 Turkish soldiers dead touched off a major escalation in Turkey-Iraq tensions on Sunday, bringing fears that Turkey would retaliate immediately by sending troops across the border into Iraq. But Turkey’s prime minister said he delayed a decision, after Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice personally intervened.

Yes, it's Condi to the rescue, because she has such a great track record in diplomacy. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he wouldn't invade right away because Condi asked him to "allow us a few days."

Of course, because Iraq wasn't a big enough mess as it is, while the incompetent members of Dubyaland rush to try to calm things down, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, himself a Kurd, expressed reluctance to hand over Kurdish militants the way Turkey is demanding:

We will not hand any Kurdish man to Turkey, even a Kurdish cat.
