Ladies and gentlemen, American conservatism
By Michael J.W. Stickings
Today at the Conservative Political Action Conference:
Mitt Romney: "I am happy to hear that after you hear from me, you will hear from Ann Coulter. That is a good thing. Oh yeah!"
Ann Coulter: "I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word 'faggot,' so I — so kind of an impasse, can’t really talk about Edwards."
And the audience cheered.
(Think Progress has the video here.)

Andrew Sullivan (a self-defined conservative, but of a different kind altogether): "When you see her in such a context, you realize that she truly represents the heart and soul of contemporary conservative activism, especially among the young... She is the new Republicanism. The sooner people recognize this, the better."
Recognize it now.

I also thought this was good from Sullivan's post, about her endoresement of Romney: "McCain is a non-starter. He is as loathed as Clinton in these parts. Giuliani is, in her words, "very, very liberal." One of his sins? He opposed the impeachment of Bill Clinton. That's the new standard."
McCain? As loathed as Clinton? Welcome to Wingnut Nation, I guess.

Oh, but then look at Sullivan's new post. Coulter is the GOP's Michael Moore. Because releasing a polemical movie every four years = calling people "faggot."
That's pretty much the essence of Andrew Sullivan. Just when I think he's said something sensible and insightful, he turns around and says something so absurdly dishonest it almost makes my head explode.

Oh, and then this bullshit--"They're young and smart enough to be interested in conservatism - and this is what they are getting?" Dumbass, they're the ones cheering. Pull your head out of your ideologue's ass and realize that these kids are cheering her because they're not smart. Maybe this is what conservatism has "become" (I mean, there was never a Southern strategy or anything), or maybe it was always something very similar to this, but Sullivan needs to wake up and turn-off the mindless auto-pilot liberal-bashing that is apparently as comforting for him as his mother's breast is for an infant. This is what your boys are up to, Sully.

Yes, I agree with you. Michael Moore equals Ann Coulter? How is that possible? When did Moore ever call anyone a "faggot"? When did he ever use the other racial and religious slurs that Coulter uses on a regular basis? I'm so tired of all the Moore-bashing.
Sullivan doesn't get it. And he certainly doesn't get the state of conservatism today.

I agree with a lot of your readers about Ann (in fact a lot of people on the right do) - she's a bomb thrower.
I thought that Gov. Romney handled it well: "Next, you're going to hear from Ann Coulter... that's a good thing... it's always good to hear from moderate voiced.
