Brass bigotry
By Michael J.W. Stickings
So Chairman of the JCS Gen. Peter Pace thinks that "homosexual acts" are "immoral," eh? (And that homosexuality should be prosecuted in the military (and in society?).)
Over to you, John Aravosis: "No, I'd say 'immoral' is letting our own injured and maimed soldiers sleep in their own urine when you all knew about it and didn't give a damn. Immoral is lying to the American people in order to get us into a war. Immoral is sending hundreds of thousands of US soldiers into battle without the proper armor. Immoral is risking the lives of our soldiers by still not having a plan for victory or exit."
And to you, Pam Spaulding: "Well it's nice to see a refreshing, frank, Tim Hardaway kind of anti-gay statement coming from the military leadership, which has presided over countless immoral military acts in Iraq. Way to go."
Yeah, and way to fight a war for freedom.
**********
Update: Pace is now saying that his comments reflected his "personal moral views," just "some personal opinions about moral conduct".
Incredibly lame.
Pace doesn't just support the military's ridiculous "don't ask, don't tell" policy, he thinks homosexuality is immoral and that homosexuals should be persecuted. In other words, he's a bigot.
**********
Update 2: Pelosi is right: "I think the military should carefully consider changing the policy. We need the most talented people, we need the language skills, we need patriotic Americans who exist across the board in our population. We don’t need moral judgment from the chairman of the Joint Chiefs."

Labels: homosexuality, U.S. military

Besides the fact that Pace has no moral authority of any kind, much less the right to represent an official government opinion about sin, he's making the same fallacious argument that kept the US military segregated: God doesn't like it, it just isn't natural, it's just wrong and you can't trust those people.
When my mother was born, women couldn't vote, when I was a baby, the military was segregated, when I was a teen, interracial marriage was a felony, and schools, transportation, restaurants, hotels and public facilities were segregated and neighborhoods were restricted.
God wanted all of that - it was natural - it was about traditional values - anything else was just wrong. People had to suffer and die to change it and I guess the long desultory and slow journey toward a just and moral society has a way to go - no thanks to the freedom hating morality mongers, the family values bigots and evangelical insurgents.

I find it ironic that a man that has made his living out of war, which I believe is the definition of a mercenary, has the brass balls to call anyone immoral.
I am a former Marine, hetero-sexual and wish there were more gay men. It is mostly a numbers thing, fewer men to compete against. I am not an alpha-male and need every advantage I can get.
I served on board the U.S.S Carl Vinson CVN-70 in the 80's. We had fewer than 100 Marines to 5,000 Navy personnel, all men; there were more than a couple of people on board that were not straight. As a Marine we often worked with the Master at Arms, (ships police), we responded to many altercations on board the ship, put 5,000+ 18-25 year old men in a confined space and stir.
Never once in 2 years did I ever see, or hear of any altercations because of sexual orientation.
Nobody cared, do your job right was all that ever mattered. When you make a mistake on an aircraft carrier someone often dies. We had 9 fatalities on one 3 month cruise alone. We had 3 gay Marines ourselves, they were damn funny, and smart, and good with weapons.
Only politicians and a small fringe element care. Nobody seems to ask the grunts what they think. If you’re lying in a ditch with a large hole in your body and the medic saving your life while dodging bullets is gay, how many would say no.
They say that there are no Atheists in foxholes, well there are no homophobes in foxholes either.
