Iran's transparent sham
By Michael J.W. Stickings
Along with notables like Bush, Chirac, Fox, Lula, Mbeki, and Musharraf, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad addressed the U.N. General Assembly yesterday. He claimed that his country's nuclear program is "transparent" and "peaceful".
Hands up if you believe him.
**********
In related news, the French have backed away from sanctions, undermining (along with Russia and China) the attempt to forge some sort of united front against Iran on the U.N. Security Council. The Independent: "President Jacques Chirac has broken ranks with the US and Britain by calling for the suspension of UN Security Council action against Iran during negotiations over its nuclear programme." (See also The New York Times.)
Hands up if you think the French are crazy.

It seems clear that Iran is not going to budge on the US position that they need to suspend their program before negotiations can begin. The big boys are going to need to make a concession to the little guy before talks can begin. I think Chirac has come around to this reality as he has been pretty hardline about Iran in the past.
It also seems clear that the US won't budge either. Is this mentality a relic from the cold war or something? Do they honestly think the world will think they're weak? Or perhaps its pressure from powerful voices within the administration? I don't know. I think providing this kind of concession to Iran would open the door to negotiation and put international pressure on Iran to prove just how transparent they are.
The wildcard in this is that Ahminejad may well be a nutbar as his statements on Israel would seem to indicate though he may just be just playing to his base in Iran. In this case hitting them becomes the only option.
Bottom line: The US can't go to war again without cause.
