The next British invasion

Look out for BBC World, a new 24-hour cable news channel set to compete with CNN and FOX. (Hey, I'm excited. Seriously.) Joe Gandelman has more here.

  • I've had BBC World for more than ten years, most of the time in competition with CNN International. I'd say BBC World it the better channel, but not by much. However, it does have a number of excellent programs, like Hardtalk, which is how interviews should be conducted: extended, in depth, polite without excluding the uncomfortable stuff.

On the other hand ... CNN International is quite different from (and better than!) the US edition of CNN. I have to admit that I've only seen the US edition of CNN a few times - when travelling in the US - but every time I've been shocked how US-centric it is. The International edition contains only some of the programming from the US edition. The international edition would send everything from soccer news, election results in an Asian country, reports from rural Africa etc.

  • You're right, CNN International isn't bad. But it'll be nice to have BBC as an alternative to CNN (U.S.) and Fox, as well as to our own news channels here in Canada.
