The Angelina factor

Angelina Jolie.

She's beautiful, she's eccentric, she's dedicated to good causes, and she's right about what's wrong with U.S. foreign policy.

Sometimes celebrity can be a good thing.

  • That's true, Erica. But that "insanity" also extends to the whole Billy Bob episode...

Or -- who knows -- maybe she's more sane than all of us.

  • I'm sorry, I resent this kind of celebrity grandstanding. It's nothing but slumming and trying to show how much holier than thou she is. And, it doesn't take a genius (or a celebrity) to figure out problems with our policy. Celebrities have every right to get involved in politics and make statements, but I resent it when they use their celebrity to get a forum based on nothing else but their celebrity. And all it does is reduce complex policy issues to sound bites and pictures of hot actresses--ooh, Angelina Jolie, she's hot and she is for poor people. She must know what she is talking about. Wow!

  • Celebrity is good for something...but I'm not always sure for what...

I actually appreciated Ms. Jolie's remarks in that they were remarkably apolitical and rational. Usually these type of celebrity comments are political bashing, not policy focused and that's a distinction worth noting.

Equally worthy of note is that unlike many she donates a lot of money to her causes. Moreover, she doesn't just donate money, but she actually goes to places and works in the trenches, she isn't afraid to get her hands dirty.

Her professional work doesn't magically grant her expert status on world affairs, but she deserves due credit for being involved on the ground and actively working in the causes she supports. That's so much more than most.

  • For a second, I thought you meant Jane Fonda. Enjoyed her autobiography, btw.
