News from New Orleans

I've already provided this link (below), but check here for all the latest from The Times-Picayune. It's updated regularly.

In particular, here's an editorial that responds in part to Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, who in denigrating New Orleans has proven once and for all that he's an insensitive idiot. The editorial's conclusion: "One thing is certain: We will rebuild. New Orleans is worth it. So are the people who call it home." Amen.

  • It was clearly a stupid remark in the way that it was made. But in fairness to Hastert, it's obvious that New Orleans is in a dangerous location and that some thought needs to be given to whether you want to rebuild it as is. Of course, I would argue that it is developers, encouraged by the GOP, that have coopted the planning process and led to development in ways that are unsustainable. But New Orleans is clearly a problematic location the way it is now and people have to think about how to make it a more sustainable area rather than merely saying we're going to rebuild it as good as new.

  • You're certainly right about New Orleans's dangerous/problematic location. One even call it a stupid location. Hopefully a rebuilt New Orleans will make more sense.

Regardless, Hastert made his remarks, right or wrong, at the wrong time and in the wrong way. The people of New Orleans hardly want to hear something like that from the Speaker of the House.
